Torres, a 1988 Central Catholic graduate and former Buttons quarterback, had battled lupus for more than 10 years. He was on the Judson coaching staff as a varsity football assistant for five seasons (2014-2018) before he became too ill to continue coaching the sport. He was a member of the New Braunfels Umpire Association TASO Baseball Chapter.
Don umpired baseball for 40+ years and also officiated football. He worked levels from Division 1 to select baseball in the San Antonio area. Recently working the state tournament in 2021 and the all star game in 2017.
In 1996, after 30 years of yelling and screaming at referees and umpires, Joe made the astounding decision to become a high school baseball umpire. From 1996 to 2020, Joe worked as a TASO baseball umpire with the New Braunfels Umpire Association Chapter where he also served as the Chapter Secretary through 2022. Joe absolutely enjoyed being an umpire and it was one of the activities he longed for most after his illness.
